The project was initially established in 2013 through a national Technical Assistance grant from the Office on Violence Against Women of the U.S. Department of Justice to promote the effective implementation and enforcement of federal, state and Tribal firearms prohibitions in domestic violence, dating violence and stalking cases. In October of 2016, the Office on Violence Against Women announced the formation of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence and Firearms, of which the Safer Families, Safer Communities project is now part, including the launch of the first-ever website wholly dedicated to addressing the role of firearms and domestic violence. The project has included the hosting of a national forum on firearms and domestic violence, the development of a comprehensive library of information and tools on firearms and domestic violence, and the creation of a community-based peer mentor system that connects communities which have successfully implemented firearm enforcement procedures with communities that seek to do so. Tools and assessment guides have been and are being developed to assist communities in identifying areas within their criminal and civil legal systems where implementation and enforcement can be enhanced. Through this project communities will have the information, training and support necessary for developing and implementing effective enforcement mechanisms to disarm domestic violence offenders.
